President Donald Trump and Congress have made a lot of market-moving changes and have the majority party (republican) in both houses of Congress. Despite this there is a strong chance that Democrats regain a majority in the House of Representatives. Bank of America economist Joseph Song says that a change from the status quo may not be bad news for investors. If Democrats gain majority control of both the House and the Senate, investor sentiment and stock prices might take a hit. Although it has been opposite of this in the past when a Republican is President. If Democrats win the Senate, 10-year yields could decline by .1% - .2%. If Republicans keep both houses, the yield curve could steepen by about the same magnitude. The U.S. dollar will be negatively impacted if Democrats take control of the Legislative branch. Democrats want to raise the Corporate tax rate to 25%. President Donald Trump wants to replace NAFTA. If Democrats take over Congress there is a great chance that Donald Trump will be impeached. Health care stocks are dying due to the uncertainty of the stocks.
There are racial preferences in the Senate. This allows a minority to wield the power of a majority. Anti-democratic tendencies of Senate are well known. Right now about 4 million citizens have almost no congressional voting power and more than 90% or black or hispanic. To fix this people want to make Puerto Rico and Washington D.C. states.
Congress is letting Pacific Northwest states kill sea lions. As of June 25, 2018 the House of Representatives have created a bill called Endangered Salmon and Fisheries Predation Prevention Act. This act will allow the states to target 85 sea lions a year in order to help the endangered salmon species.
"Salmon consumption at Bonneville Dam is five times what it was five years ago, and threatened and endangered species of salmon are being damaged by sea lions in the Columbia River." - Risch
This act has been created to help fishers and their fish as this problem has only increased. Most that live in the troubled location can understand, but others strongly disagree with this harsh decision.
"This is a waste of money, time, and lives and diverts attention from the real problems the fish face." - Sharon Young, field director for The Humane Society of the United States
From what I have seen this nation is at a battle on how to act. Leave a comment on what you think, do you think it is okay to kill some to save more or do you feel that the nation should wait and let this situation continue until another answer comes if what to do?
The Chelonia Mydas, an endangered sea turtle species, counts on coral reefs that are surrounding the Hawaiian Islands for food and protection. There are many other species of wildlife that also count on the reefs. Swimmers stand on and touch the reef causing them to become more dangerous for wildlife. Sunscreen on people that touch the reef causes toxic chemicals to bleach the coral. This also hurts fish reproduction. Legislature passed a law making the state of Hawaii the first in the nation to ban the sale of sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. This ban will not come into effect until January 1, 2021. The law only applies to the sale of sunscreen, but not what people bring with them. The sunscreen chemicals reduce mature coral's resiliency to heat stress. The chemicals are toxic to fish, sea grass, and marine wildlife. Craig Downs said that fish exposed to the sunscreen for 45 days and removed to a fresh environment continues to have deformed offspring. "You keep allowing the sunscreen pollution, you're never going to get those reefs back," Downs said. "Then it's goodbye to tourism in Hawaii, Goodbye to the native culture practices, goodbye to aloha."
Elijah Cumming is a democrat from the state of Maryland who is very unhappy and wants to investigate President Donald Trump. Mr. Cummings has a strong believe that Congress is allowing Trump to have alot of freedom with little to no consequences. He says Congress has fallen short of checking the Presidents behavior. He also strongly disagrees with the apointment of senator Brett Kavanaugh, it is a very dishonest choice by Congress. Kavanaugh was accused of sexually assaulting a woman, but Congress didnt do anything about it. In his Conference he made a seen while screaming at officals. Kavanaugh was still appointed to office this past week. Cumming doesn´t trust that Trump and Kavanaugh are telling the truth about what bwas said that they have done, even under oath. He states in an interview that all he needs is a couple of documents to prove his point. Normally Elijah Cummings is a personal man, he keeps to himself ,but this is somthing he has spoken very loudly about.
Opioid is a very addictive substance and is one of the leading causes in overdoses. In 2015, 33,000 citizens were killed by Opioid overdoses. That's more than the death caused by motor vehicle crashes. Every year since then each state has enacted some type of measure addressing these drugs used as painkillers ( Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Methadone), Heroin and Fentanyl. In 2018 legislation has addressed several bills. One of these bills was "Programs to collect unused pills." Another bill was "Access to Naloxone", this is the overdose reversal drug. Many people are unaware of its existence. Although, there's a flaw in distributing this drug to the public. This defeats the purpose of lowering the number of Opioim overdoses. Opioim addictions will most likely continue to become an epidemic.
Congress has the ability to write bills to become laws. All revenue bills must originate in the House of Representatives. This is one power that only the House has. Other powers include: The ability to impeach a federal official and introducing all tax legislation. To make these bills into laws, the Senate must also approve of them. Some powers that only the Senate has are: ratifying treaties with other countries, the power to try all impeached officials, and confirm the president's appointments to the presidential Cabinet and Supreme Court justices. Together, both houses can levy taxes on citizens to pay for the governmental budget, create an annual governmental budget, and make sure the taxes are used for the intended purpose. If one house wants a bill to become a law, the other house must approve it before the bill is sent to the president. If the other house agrees, the bill must be identical in each house before it is sent to the president. If the other house disagrees, a joint committee is created to compromise until each house agrees. Then, it is sent to the president where they can veto, sign, or ignore the bill. This process continues to make new laws as more political problems occur.
Former prisoner of war and U.S senator John McCain dies at the age of 81 after deciding to discontinue his treatments for a malignant brain tumor. John McCain served as a Navy Pilot during the Vietnam war, were he was captured and tortured, leaving him permanently disable. After returning home and retiring from the Navy McCain entered politics, were he was first elected to the House of Reps. in 1982, and then to the U.S Senate in 1986. Later senator McCain decided to run for president, but after failing twice he became a pivotal figure through out his career, and accquired a reputation for wiling to defy his own party and compromise with democrats. John McCain was a well known and respected man whose legacy will live on.
Democrats in the Senate make a made a deal with republican senators that allow the confirmation of 15 judges for the republicans. The democrats made this deal so they could go to their represented state and campaign for the upcoming midterm elections. Senate minority leader (democrat) Chuck Schumer and his caucus felt the agreement was simple and worth it. With the deal being set the democrats gain a few weeks of campaigning and republicans gain 15 new Circuit Court judges. By Senate rules, even if democrats fought the nominees and forced 30 hours of debate, McConnell would have gotten them all confirmed by November 1st. Democrats could have used an uncommon tactic of leaving a skeleton crew in Washington. This would force the GOP (Republican Party) to force them to take a roll call votes on the judges over the weeks. Liberal activist are urging the Democrats to show more fight after Kavanaugh's confirmation. Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos said that Democrats need a new Senate leader. But senators had to weigh in that dynamic alongside the approaching midterms alongside the Senate map not looking so good for the Democrats. Democrats think it is a fair trade off to get a start in a serious election, mainly to try and win to majority in the house, and save their endangered seats. After this deal Trump and McConnell will have confirmed 84 judges over the past two years.
Hawaii's coral reefs are a very popular tourist attraction because of the wide variety of marine life that lives there. Recently, Hawaiian officials have discovered that the chemicals in sunscreen are harming these structures and its inhabitants. The toxic chemicals known as oxybenzone and octinoxate have been said to be bleaching the coral reefs and are keeping them from reforming. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are also harmful to fish, sea grass, and marine algae. Since sunscreen is so important to the safety of humans, Legislature has passed a law that bans sunscreens that contain these two ingredients. This law, signed by David Ige, will not go into effect until January 1, 2021. Hawaii is currently the only state to have these ingredients banned in the creation of sunscreen.
President Trump met with North Korea head of state Kim jong-un to discuss a treaty. The agreement they reached caused a rucuss throught the halls of power including the US senate. Leaders from both parties expressed the worries and will vote on a nuclear deal once revised and finalised. Others went to the senate floor to file amendments to the defence bill in order to restrict the Presidents authority. The senates interest grew at this point to foreign policy and military activities has been necassary and refreshing. The powers discussed between the legislative and the executive branches have been worried about for years. An example is the president is commander in chief and controls the military but congress is the only one who can declare war. The founding fathers designed it this way to show clarency in power of the executive branch but have congress be a buffer to that power. James Wilson a member of the continental congress drafter of the constitution said, " This system will not hurry us into war; It is calculated against it.". This will not be decided by one man or a group of men but by the legislation as a whole.
The state of California has banned full-service restaurants from distributing plastic straws to their consumers. The law requires customers to ask for straws rather than them being directly given. The governor, Jerry Brown, signed the law and said that it doesn't apply to fast food establishments and won't go into effect until next year. The law, however, won't be reaching to some cities such as Santa Barbara and San Francisco due to the fact that they've already banned plastic straws completely. There will be a fine of $300 per year, after 2 warnings, to restaurants that don't comply. Those in favor of the law hope that it will reduce ocean pollution. Plastic has helped us advance, but the consequences, including damaging the environment, were getting out of hand. Others, however, argue that it will negatively effect disabled people who rely on straws. Some lawmakers who were against the law said it'd be unfair to the restaurants, but the restaurant industry didn't oppose to the idea of banning straws. Controversy, aside, the law HAS been signed and WILL take place.
The House and Senate have reached agreement on a lot of measures to address the opioid epidemic. The bill was backed by leaders of both parties. It contains a mix of law enforcement and public health measures. A provision in the bill could make it easier for Medicaid recipients to get care for substance abuse over the next five years. Both the house and the senate still need to vote on the compromise bill. The bill allows nurse practitioners and physician assistants to prescribe buprenorphine, an anti-addiction medication that requires a special license and extra training. It also allows nurse midwives and clinical nurse specialists to prescribe buprenorphine for the next five years. It also includes a provision to help stop the flow of opioids into america by mail. It will require USPS to collect information on international mail shipments. It would provide funding for research and development of new painkillers.
The purpose of the "Save Our Seas Act" is to clean and keep up marine debris. This act also focuses on both land and sea debris. The "Save Our Seas Act" allows the agency, NOAA, to assist in the cleanup. The bill(which is now a law)urges the President to do the following:
1) Support the research and the growth of the environmental improvements of solid waste disposal.
2)Work with foreign countries that help and contribute to preventing marine debris.
3) Study the issue and related issues, along with relating factors of marine debris.
4) Encourage the trade representatives to consider the debris made form future trades.
With all the many things wanted from the President is wanted, but the main purpose of this bill and act is keep our seas and land clean.
I think that the 1st amendment is one of the most important amendments because it outlines several civil liberties in one. We're given the rights of speech, religion, press, petition, and assembly. Without these, we would be controlled by the government. These few liberties give us individuality and the ability have our own opinions and beliefs. The next amendment I think is important is the 19th amendment. Women were given the right to vote in 1920 which started a revolution for women as they gained more and more rights until they were equal with men. Women throughout history have stood together through their times of injustice and it finally paid off.
I agree with what you said about the 19th amendment. Women since then have been able to gain more respect and rights throughout the history of womens sufferage.
Yes, the 1st can be important, but once the line is drawn at what you can say is it really a protected right?
I agree I believe that both of these amendments are very important.
I think the first and and twenty sixth amendment are the two most important amendments. The first allows basically freedom of petition, speech, protest, religion, and assembly which is extremely important. Without it we wouldn´t have any input by the people which is what the constitiution was built upon and was said to be the most important. When the twenty sixth was input it allowed younger more free thinkers to vote which brought in a whole bunch of new voter being more open to different ideas. Another reason is that it´s fair to the newest generation to be able to vote and what not.
I personally believe that free speech and younger more free thinkers are dumb because they are noobs and think they know whats best, but they wont until they have a familly to take care of.
I agree with you Gabe.
In my own personal opinion the 1st amendment and the 13th amendment are the two most important amendments added to the constitution. The reason I feel this way is because the first amendment give us many basic rights that we need to have a happy nation. For example, if we were forced to be Islamic many people wouldn't be happy that's why freedom of religion is so important. Also the right to gather. Some countries will not even allow people to gather. The other important one is the 13th amendment. We can't be a country based on freedom if we keep half our population chained up serving us. That is not freedom in any way shape or form.
I believe that first and the second are the most important Amendments.
The first amendment is the right of speech as citizens of the U.S it is important to have speech in a democracy.
The second amendment is that every american, that hasn't conducted certain crimes, have the right to bear arms, we need this right so that in a rime of emergency our citizens have the means of their own protection.
I agree because they allow us to have are basic liberty and rights that make us who we are.
I agree, those are the two I chose because gun rights and reform are both very important to citizen safety, as well as the freedoms we possess as Americans.
I agree with this because these are the first and most basic amendments that we need.
I believe that the 1st amendment is one of the most important be cause it allow people to express themselves, and live their lives freely, and also fight for the policies they strongly believe in. Another amendment I believe to be very important is the 8th because protects people from unusual punishment, and prevent crazy people from torturing others.
I agree because the 8th stops the government from punishing citizens in unusual ways that cause harm to the person
The 1st and 12th amendments are the most important because the 12th changes the way the president and vice president are elected. The 1st amendment gives the people freedom of religion, press, petition, speech, assembly. These are basic rights used everyday and the electorial college allows for an easier way for the peoples opinions to be heard.
I agree that the 1st is an important one. I wouldn't have immediately thought of the 12th, however
I agree with you Maggie the 1st and 12 amendment shape the way America is built...
I personally believe the two most important amendments are the 12th and 19th because the provide equal opportunity to all citizens to be equal in their rights.
One of the most important amendments is the 10th amendments. This amendment keeps the national government from saying every power not stated in the constitution is a implied power and tries to take over. With this amendment the national gov. can not do that because they are given to the states.
Another pretty cool amendment is the 12th amendment. This makes controlling the nation easier because the Vice and President have to be in the same party and voted for together. This makes it easier for the citizens and less likely for the Vice to kill the President.
I believe the first amendment is one of the most important amendments. It gives citizens the freedom of speech, press, and assembly. Without this right the citizens would get in trouble for everything and not be able to express their opinions. The 13th amendment is another great amendment. Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation helped to abolished slavery, but this amendment abolished it and made it illegal. Without this amendment all African Americans would be classified as property and be bossed around by whites.
I agree that the 1st is one of the most important. The 13th is also a very important amendment.
The first amendment and eighth amendment are the most important two. The first amendment dealing with freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. Secondly, the eighth amendment prohibits the government from imposing excessive bail, excessive fines, or cruel and unusual punishment.
I think that the 1st and 2nd amendments are the most important. This is because they allow citizens the most rights including many speech freedoms and the right to bear arms. they also give us are rights to change the government and to demand reform within the government in order to have it help us instead of furthering the politicians agenda.
I believe the the 1st amendment is one of the most important amendments to the Constitution because it gives people the ability to speak out and let their opinions be heard and this is very important in our government today. Another amendment that I think is very important is the 8th amendment, which protects citizens from having any harsh or unusual punishments for any crime. This keeps the punishments and fines fair depending on the crime committed.
I agree with your ideology on the 1st Amendment but not necassirly the 8th
The second amendment is crucial to our safety as citizens when the guns are in the right hands. There needs to be more background checks, more mental health checks, and every possible step that needs to be taken in order to ensure complete safety of the holders. Guns don´t kill people, people kill people with the guns. Also, the first amendment is very important to U.S. citizens. Many immigrants come to this country in search of freedom from oppression because they were not allowed to voice their opinions without being publicly shamed, or in some cases, killed. The freedoms the amendment allow entitle Americans to life the ´American Dream´.
I agree with what you said about how guns don't kill people and that the people with the guns do.
I believe that the two most important amendments to the US Constitution are the 1st amendment and the 15th amendment. The 1st amendment gives the citizens many different civil liberties to keep us free in the USA. The 15th amendment makes sure that every person is allowed to vote no matter what race or their status as a former slave.
The two most important amendments are the 1st and the 26th. The first amendment gives everybody, regardless of color, sex, age, etc. the ability to say whatever (unless it directly harms someone, like libel/slander) without legal repercussion. This is important because it allows for many things considered normal, like having different opinions. The 26th amendment is also important. It says that everyone, regardless of race or sex (but still disallowing minors) to vote in an American Election. This is also important because everybody being able to vote is the foundation of the nation.
I think the 1st and 5th amendments are the most important amendments are the most important. The 1st amendment protects all citizens most basic civil liberties and natural rights, like the right to worship who you want, praise Jesus, and the ability to say what you would like to say. The 5th amendment protects those under arrest so that their liberties and rights are still protected by not being subjected to double jeopardy, and the right to plea the 5th or not tell on yourself basically. These two amendments are directly for the protection and safety of the people which means that these are the most important out of all the amendments.
I agree with your statements especially with the praise jesus
I also said that the first amendment is important although I did not understand the fifth until now.
I believe that the 15th and 19th amendments are the most important. These amendments have to do with suffrage of men and women. The 15th amendment was passed in 1870. This amendment gave males the right to vote. White males could vote, but this amendment gave colored men the ability it go out and vote. The 19th amendment was passed in 1920. This amendment has to deal with women suffrage. I feel that this is the most important because, myself being a female, we used to only be able to cook, clean, and do laundry. Whit voting, women felt like their rights were extended, which they were, and have more freedom.
19th is also important I think because of women's rights.
The 1st Amendment gives the people freedom to assemble, petition, speech, religion, and press. As you see these freedoms being used everyday especially by protests. Then the 6th Amendment gives everyone the right to attorney in court no matter the case. Then gives speedy trial, public trial, jury trial, and public witnesses. These help win people cases everyday.
I believe that the 1st and 8th amendments are the more important ones. The first amendment is the "Freedoms of Expression," which includes the freedoms of press, religion, petition, assembly, and speech. These are important because they allow for citizens to express themselves freely. The eight amendment legalizes all cruel and unusual punishments. I feel this is important because if a person is being held for interrogation, the government or police can not use any forms of mental, emotional, or physical torture to access the knowledge or information one possesses.
I believe that the first amendment and the nineteenth amendment are the most important amendments. This is because the first amendment lets people have freedom of speech, religion, petition, protest, and press. Allowing the people to have these freedoms lets them experience their own opinion. With the people having their own opinion, it makes everyone different. Then, the nineteenth amendment is important because women deserve just as much rights to vote as men do. Men can vote, therefore women should be able to vote too.
I believe that the 12th and 19th amedment are the most amendment becuse the 12th amendment makes it so that the president and vice president are not on aposing sides of most issues so they get things done and I believe that the the 19th amendment is also the most imortant becuse before that half of the population could not vote
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
